Skyline Caverns

www.skylinecaverns.com

Located at the Northern Entrance to Skyline Drive and the Shenandoah National Park, Skyline Caverns is one of only a few ples in the world where you will find unique formations known as Anthodites. Called "Orchids of the Mineral Kingdom", the Anthodites seem to defy gravity. Their delicate white spikes spread in all directions, including upwards, from their position on the cave ceiling. Their growth rate is estimated to be only one inch every seven thousand years. The mystery of how they form only adds to the beauty of the Anthodites.

The Caverns were opened to the public in 1977. It was originally explored by Col. Henry Parsons in 1889-91, but the natural entrance was too steep for general use.

When the modern development took place, some tools, a ladder, a lantern, and rope were found where they had been left in 1891.

Along with spectacular landscape, expect an entertaining tour through the caverns. On a 45 minute journey into the east coast's deepest commercial cavern, descend 34 stories into the earth, and learn how our striking underground world was carved and continues to grow
